Darvaza Gas Crater: Visit the ‘Door
Oct 05, 2026
There’s a waterfall in the UAE that never dries up. And UNESCO just made it world-famous.
On 25 July 2026, Wadi Wurayah in Fujairah became the UAE’s first natural UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you live in the Gulf, this might be the most surprising place you can reach in a day.
A wadi is a valley that usually stays dry and only fills with water after rain. Wadi Wurayah is different. Hidden in the Hajar Mountains of Fujairah, it has freshwater pools, green plants and the UAE’s only permanent, year-round waterfall.
It’s protected as a national park, and now it has global recognition too.
It’s the UAE’s third World Heritage Site overall, and the first one picked for its nature.
Go in the cooler months, roughly October to April. Summer temperatures in the mountains are brutal and tours don’t run then. Early morning is the most comfortable time on the trail.
You can’t just drive in and walk around. To protect the ecosystem, access is guided only. Tours run during the cooler months through Fujairah’s official tourism operator, Fujairah Holidays. Spaces are limited, so book ahead.
From Dubai, the drive to Fujairah takes around 2 hours. From Doha, fly to Dubai or Sharjah and drive across.
Places like this stay special because visitors treat them gently.
Fujairah is the UAE’s only emirate fully on the east coast, facing the Gulf of Oman. Combine your wadi visit with a beach afternoon, snorkelling near Snoopy Island, or a stop at Al Bidyah Mosque, often called the oldest mosque in the UAE.
When people picture the UAE, they usually think of skyscrapers and malls. Wadi Wurayah shows a completely different side: mountains, fresh water, wildlife, and quiet.
For people living in Qatar, Dubai or anywhere in the region, it’s a reminder that you don’t always need a long-haul flight to find real nature. Some of the most surprising places are a short drive or flight away.
The UNESCO listing should also help protect the wadi for the long term. That’s why the guided-only rule matters: it keeps the waterfall flowing and the wildlife safe for the next generation of visitors.
