A wooden plank bolted to a cliff, more than 2,000 metres up. And people queue for hours to walk it.

Mount Huashan in China is often called the “world’s most dangerous hike”. Photos of the plank walk go viral every year. But here’s the secret: it looks far scarier than it really is.

What is Mount Huashan?

Huashan, or Mount Hua, is one of China’s Five Great Mountains and a sacred place in Taoism. For centuries, monks and pilgrims climbed its steep granite peaks to reach temples near the top.

Today it’s a huge attraction, with cable cars, stone stairways cut into the rock, and some very famous thrill spots.

The five peaks

  • North Peak: 1,614 m, the usual starting point.
  • Middle Peak: 2,039 m.
  • West Peak: 2,082 m, with a dramatic ridge.
  • East Peak: 2,096 m, the best place for sunrise.
  • South Peak: 2,154 m, the highest point.

The famous plank walk

Below the South Peak, a narrow path of wooden planks is fixed to a vertical cliff face. There’s nothing below you but air and a long drop into the valley.

Before you step on, you have to rent a full-body climbing harness with two clips. You stay clipped to a safety cable the entire time. As one guide puts it, the structure is extremely safe, and the danger is almost entirely in your head.

The path is a dead end, so you walk out, take your photos, and come back the same way, passing people coming the other direction.

In busy season, the queue can take 2 to 3 hours, so plan for it.

When to go

September and October usually bring clear skies, cool air and autumn colour. Avoid Chinese national holidays, especially early October, when the mountain gets extremely crowded.

For sunrise at East Peak, many people hike overnight or stay in a hotel on the mountain.

How to get there

Huashan is about 120 km east of Xi’an. The easiest way is the high-speed train from Xi’an North Station to Huashan North Station, which takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Shuttle buses then take you to the cable car stations.

From the Gulf, fly to Xi’an through a major Chinese hub, or directly where routes allow.

A simple one-day route

  1. Take the West Peak cable car up for dramatic views on the way.
  2. Walk to the South Peak and do the plank walk.
  3. Continue to East Peak and Middle Peak.
  4. Finish at North Peak and take the cable car down.

With entry, shuttles and both cable cars, a one-day visit costs roughly 440 RMB.

Tips

  • Start early. 7 to 8 am is busy, but later queues are even longer.
  • Wear shoes with grip. The stone steps are steep and worn smooth.
  • Bring gloves. Handy for gripping chains on steep stairs.
  • Pack water and snacks. Food on the mountain is more expensive.
  • Skip it if you have a serious fear of heights. The views are still amazing from the main paths.
