Darvaza Gas Crater: Visit the ‘Door
Oct 05, 2026
These caves melt every summer and form again every winter. So nobody has ever stood inside this exact one before.
Deep inside Iceland’s glaciers, meltwater carves tunnels and chambers through the ice. When winter comes and the ice freezes solid, they become some of the most beautiful places on Earth: caves that glow bright blue from the inside.
Glacier ice is very old and very dense. Over hundreds of years, snow is pressed down so hard that most of the air bubbles are squeezed out.
This dense ice absorbs every colour of light except blue, so blue is what reaches your eyes. The effect is strongest around midday, when sunlight shines deepest through the ice.
Ice caves are not permanent. In summer, meltwater rivers run through the glacier and change its shape. Some caves collapse, others grow, and new ones appear. By the time winter comes, the caves are completely different from last year.
That’s what makes ice caving so special. Your photos will be of a place that won’t exist next year.
Want to see the Northern Lights too? Winter in Iceland gives you a chance at both on the same trip.
Vatnajökull is Iceland’s biggest glacier, and its natural blue ice caves are the most famous. Tours usually start near Jökulsárlón, the glacier lagoon full of floating icebergs, in southeast Iceland.
Also on Vatnajökull. Some are more like open ice canyons, which is great if you don’t like tight spaces.
Near the town of Vík. It’s open all year and has dramatic black stripes of volcanic ash in the ice.
If you’re visiting outside winter, Into the Glacier on Langjökull is a tunnel carved into the ice, open year-round. In Reykjavík, the Perlan museum has an indoor ice cave.
You must go with certified glacier guides. Glaciers have hidden cracks called crevasses, and ice can be unstable. Guides check the caves every day, decide which are safe, and give you a helmet and crampons (spikes for your boots).
Never try to enter an ice cave on your own.
Fly into Keflavík International Airport near Reykjavík. From the Gulf, connect through a European hub. From Reykjavík, Jökulsárlón is about a 5-hour drive along the south coast, past waterfalls and black-sand beaches, so most people stay a night or two in the area.
Why are Iceland’s ice caves blue? Blue lights inside, dense ice that absorbs every colour except blue, reflected sky, or minerals in the water? Answer on my post at @explor_shan.

Can I visit ice caves in summer?
Natural blue caves are usually closed, but Katla and man-made ice tunnels are open year-round.
Is ice caving hard?
No special fitness is needed for most tours. You’ll walk on ice with crampons.
Is it cold inside?
Yes, around freezing, but usually calmer than outside because there’s no wind.
Would you go inside? Save this for winter and tag the friend who’d brave the cold.
