Darvaza Gas Crater: Visit the ‘Door
Oct 05, 2026
350 km of mountain roads, cliffs and pink flower fields. And this is the best time of year to ride it.
The Ha Giang Loop is a road trip through Vietnam’s far north, close to the border with China. It’s one of the most talked-about adventures in Asia, and once you see the views you’ll understand why.
It’s a circular route of about 350 km, starting and ending in Ha Giang city. Most people ride it by motorbike over 3 to 5 days, stopping in small mountain towns along the way.
The road climbs over high passes, drops into valleys, and winds past rice terraces, limestone peaks and villages of the Hmong, Dao, Tày and other ethnic groups.
From October to November, buckwheat flowers bloom across the hills, turning whole slopes pink, purple and white. September and October also bring golden rice terraces and clearer skies. It’s peak season for a reason.
The star of the loop. A road cut into the side of a cliff, high above the turquoise Nho Que River. It took over 1,000 young volunteers and locals years of work in the 1960s to build the route, and you can feel the effort when you ride it.
A UNESCO Global Geopark full of dramatic grey rock mountains and ancient stone formations.
A giant Vietnamese flag flying near the country’s northernmost point. Climb the steps for views into the hills.
An early viewpoint over the twin “Fairy Bosom” hills, a famous local landmark.
The roads are steep, narrow and full of tight bends, with trucks and buses coming the other way. Unless you’re an experienced motorbike rider, the smart choice is an “easy rider”, a local driver who rides while you sit on the back.
You still get every view, you can take photos the whole way, and you don’t have to worry about the road. Plenty of experienced riders choose it too.
Licence warning: to ride legally, you need a Vietnamese motorbike licence. International permits aren’t accepted. Riding without one can also cancel your travel insurance.
Ha Giang is about 300 km north of Hanoi. Most people take an overnight sleeper bus or a daytime bus of around 6 to 7 hours. From the Gulf, fly to Hanoi first.
