A Jungle Grows in the Dark: Son Doong Cave, Booked Until 2028

Deep under the mountains, sunlight falls through a hole in the roof of the world.

Where it lands, trees grow. A real jungle, inside a cave.

Mist drifts between the chambers. A river runs in the dark.

This is Hang Son Doong in central Vietnam, the largest cave passage on Earth. It is also one of the hardest places in the world to enter.

How the mountain hid a forest

Son Doong is so big it has its own weather, its own river and its own forest. The main passage is so tall that a skyscraper could fit in parts of it.

In two places, the ceiling has collapsed. Sunlight pours through these openings, and where the light lands, a jungle has grown, its trees reaching up toward the holes in the roof. Clouds form inside, because the air underground is a different temperature to the air outside.

For a long time, nobody knew. In the early 1990s, a local man, Hồ Khanh, found the entrance while sheltering from a storm in the jungle. Then he could not find it again for years. In 2009, he led a British caving team back, and they realised it was the biggest cave passage ever found.

The cave sits inside Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site full of caves. Today only about 1,000 visitors a year may enter. Picture it as around 100 small groups of up to 10 guests each, spread across a year. Travellers from more than 70 countries have made the journey.

Sleeping beside an underground river

The expedition lasts 4 days and 3 nights. You hike through jungle and cross rivers. Inside, you abseil and climb with ropes, your headlamp a small light in a very large dark.

At night you sleep at underground campsites, next to rivers you can hear but barely see. A team of guides, porters and cooks travels with you. In the morning, you wake to mist moving slowly through the chambers, as if the cave itself is breathing.

It is hard work. The operator checks that you are fit and ready before confirming your place.

Before you go

  • Where: Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, central Vietnam.
  • Getting there: fly to Dong Hoi, the closest airport, then drive about an hour to Phong Nha town. From the Gulf, connect through Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.
  • Who runs it: one company, Oxalis Adventure, runs all the official expeditions. You cannot visit without a tour.
  • Cost: several thousand US dollars, because the group is tiny and the support team is large.
  • When to go: Expeditions run roughly January to August. 2026 and 2027 are fully booked; 2028 is open for booking. Expeditions stop when the rains raise the rivers.
  • Book early: very early. Years ahead for Son Doong.
  • Train first: hiking with a pack and climbing will feel much easier.
  • Can’t wait until 2028? Phong Nha has other caves open now. Paradise Cave is huge and easy, with a boardwalk. Phong Nha Cave is explored by boat along an underground river. Hang Én, one of the world’s biggest caves, is an overnight trek with camping by a lake inside. At Tu Lan, you swim through flooded caves on a multi-day adventure. Hang Én or Tu Lan make great warm-ups.
